To the extreme south of Portugal is located the region of Algarve and it is till date the most popular tourist destination in Portugal. Monchique is a small town located in the Algarve region of Portugal and boasts of exquisite natural beauty by virtue of its location. It is known that Portugal faces the Atlantic on the south and western side. Monchique is located in between two high hills named Picota and Foia and its ideal location provides wonderful views of the extensive coastal plains on one end and the intense deep waters of the opulent ocean on the other. It is the splendor of this place that despite not being invaded in regular intervals by tourists yet, it has continued to emerge as a popular joint for the location or buying of country houses or villas and cottages. Like most of the Portuguese towns and villages, here also it is possible to find certain remnants of previous centuries.
Significant among them are the Parish church which belongs to the 16th century and displays excellent workmanship and architecture of Manueline format the entrance. There is also present a 17th century Franciscan monastery and though it is in dilapidated condition, it provides a magnificent view of the surrounding areas of the countryside. One of the most popular produces generated in Monchique is a specialized drink named ‘medronho’ which is obtained by means of collecting and refining fruits from the arbutus bushes. One of the foremost Portuguese indigenous products, cork is also produced in this region.
